With just six seconds left in the first quarter, Sam Figueroa's shot rang in to bring UC Irvine to a 2-2 tie with the Cal men's water polo team.

But it would be his only goal of the game, as the No. 2 Bears scored five consecutive goals to open the second period, smothering the seventh-ranked Anteaters on their way to a 13-10 win at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Saturday.

Cal (15-4, 3-1 in the MPSF) came out with a balanced attack, as junior Brian Dudley earned his second hat trick of the season to lead the team's seven scorers.

"Everyone's making the extra pass and the shooters were having a lot of confidence," senior co-captain Spencer Warden said. "We were playing for each other and put our shots away."

The offensive outburst was matched by a stiff effort on the defensive end, particularly after fouls. Although Cal was hit with 14 exclusions -- including three on sophomore Ivan Rackov to eject him from the game -- it limited UC Irvine (13-7, 1-2) to just six goals on 6-on-5s.

"We were working on getting our hands on shots," Warden said. "A lot of tip-outs, guys getting out bigger and shrinking the cage, so shooters were having a harder time finding a hole. Communication's been huge."

The Bears will make a non-conference visit to No. 16 UC Davis at 12 p.m on Sunday.
