For the Cal women's tennis team, the Northwest Regional tournament at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Stanford might be best be described by the phrase "mission accomplished."

Singles and doubles play wrapped up Monday afternoon, and the Bears' top three players-sophomore Jana Juricova and juniors Marina Cossou and Mari Andersson-had made strong cases to qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships, which begin Nov. 5 in New Haven, Conn.

"I think it was our best tournament overall so far this season," Andersson said."

Juricova automatically qualified for the national invitational after her quarterfinal appearance in the ITA All-American Championships earlier this month. Andersson and Cossou are still waiting on a committee decision, which will be made official on Thursday, as to whether they will receive at-large spots in the tournament.

"Overall, I was very pleased with how the team played this weekend, and I feel we accomplished our objective, which was to have our top three qualify," coach Amanda Augustus said. "They all did great, and Mari and Marina I believe should qualify for at-large spots at the national indoors after how they played this weekend."

The third-year coach went on to say that she believes Cossou has a "99 percent" chance to qualify, while Andersson has a "95 percent" chance to win an at-large spot.

Cal was well represented in both the singles and doubles brackets, as Juricova reached the singles final match. Juricova and Andersson, reached the doubles final match.

The Bears were not able to take home any trophies, however, as Juricova lost, 6-3, 6-3, to Denise Dy of Washington.

"I feel like I improved during my matches as I went on," Juricova said. "Things just didn't go my way in the final. I wanted to win and I was disappointed, but it was nice to make the final."

In the doubles final, Juricova and Andersson fell to Stanford's top doubles team of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette, the same duo that Cal defeated to win the NCAA doubles championship last season.

"It would've been nice to win, obviously, but I don't think it's anything to be upset about," Augustus said. "I think we got what we wanted from the tournament."

All nine Cal players participated this weekend, and overall, Augustus was pleased with the progress her team has made, especially with her freshmen and sophomores.

Freshmen Tayler Davis, Annie Goransson and Nelly Radeva were all able to advance past the first round. Goransson and Radeva advanced to the round of 32, while Davis fell in the round of 64.
