Demonstrators wearing green shirts protested on UC Berkeley's Upper Sproul Plaza Thursday during a rally against the Iranian government's treatment of protesters against the alleged election fraud that took place in Iran this June.

The rally was the beginning of a day-long series of events hosted by the Iranian Student Alliance in America, a non-profit student organization headquartered and established on campus in 2002. The alliance aims to raise awareness about the silent protesters currently imprisoned, being tortured and killed for demanding a reelection and investigation into the results of Iran's tenth presidential election.According to organizers, the protest drew about 250 people.

"We really hope to create a safe space for people to ask questions and learn what's going on," said Shokoofeh Rajabzadeh, a senior majoring in English and a member of the alliance.

The Iranian election, which took place on June 12, 2009 and included candidates Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Mir-Hossein Mousavi, had the highest voter turnout in Iran's history.

Despite public enthusiasm displayed for Mousavi during the pre-election campaigns, results after the election revealed a consistent 2 to 1 ratio among votes in favor of Ahmadinejad.

Believing the results were due to ballot-box tampering, protesters took to the streets and demanded investigation of the election's results, where they were met with violence from the authorities.
