Murder Charge Dropped Against South Berkeley Gang Leader

A murder charge against Berkeley gang leader Greg Fite was dropped Monday because the prosecutor said the case lacked admissible evidence and credible witnesses.

Fite, one of the leaders of the Waterfront, a South Berkeley street gang, was arrested July 13 on suspicion of murder in an Oakland case from last spring, prosecutor John Creighton said.

Despite the dropped charge, the April 23 homicide of Nguyen Ngo remains an open case, Creighton said. He added that if sufficient evidence and witnesses are obtained in the future, Fite can be recharged with murder.

Fite remains in custody on a no-bail hold at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin for parole violation. Creighton said he was unsure of when Fite would be released.

Two other Waterfront gang members, brothers Coleon Carroll and Joseph Carroll, were arrested in June and also remain in custody, said Creighton.

"There are a whole series of homicides and other serious felonies (attributed) to Berkeley and North Oakland gangs," he said. "There's an ongoing rivalry."
