Monday morning, San Mateo County Sheriff's Office officials recovered the body of Berkeley resident Reginald Ungren, 65, from the bottom of a cliff at Devil's Slide, according to Acting Lt. Wes Matsuura.
An empty car found atop the cliff had license plates matching those of Ungren, who had been reported missing.
Matsuura said the abandoned vehicle was noticed Monday morning by one of the sheriff's coastal patrol units, who saw what appeared to be a body in the cliffs below. A cliff rescue unit removed the body from the area and brought it to the coroner's office, where a coroner is still determining cause of death.
Matsuura said the incident is currently under investigation, and it is difficult to determine whether the death is the result of a crash. However, he added that the area is known for crashes in inclement weather.
"During really bad weather the road gets really bad out there," he said.
