You ever see the classic Nike commercial with Tiger Woods bouncing a golf ball on his club?

Needless to say, the next time I went out and played mini-golf I tried, rather unsuccessfully, to emulate Tiger's freestyle ability. Turns out every golfer, was doing the same thing around that time.

This week, Cal golfer Eric Mina gave me some insight as to what his best freestyle move was along with some other tidbits about the life of a collegiate golfer.

Mustafa Shaikh: What's the deal with the golf team missing class on weekdays to play tournaments instead of just missing class Friday like other athletic teams? Does that wreak havoc on your class schedule?

Eric Mina: It does, it does. We're traveling weeks at a time. Missing class all the time, and it's tough to catch up and get good grades.

MS: How do professors feel about this?

EM: A lot of them like golfers but some of them are kind of bitter about it that we're missing so much of their class. So they're kind of hard on us at times.

MS: I've been thinking about challenging a guy on your team to a game of mini-golf. Who do you think I should take on?

EM: I would have to say my boy Max Homa. You could take him on and beat him for sure.

MS: How do I get in his head?

EM: Just keep talking-talk smack to him. Max Homa, (Mustafa is) going to take you down, man … I'm just playing with you Max.

MS: Over the weekend there was some news about Anthony Kim possibly partying between rounds at the President's Cup. Set the record straight: Anthony Kim or Eric Mina, who parties harder?

EM: Eric Mina. (laughs) I'm just kidding ... There was a tournament, Tiger's tournament actually, in Southern California, where he was leading. It was rumored that he went out, partied and he ended up losing by a shot.

MS: What happens if Tiger was out there partying with him? Would it be all right then? You can't pass up the opportunity to take shots with Tiger.

EM: (laughs) I don't know.

MS: Since we're on Tiger, he has a slew of golf commercials. The first one that went big time was the one where he's out there on the course and just bouncing the ball on his club. Can you do that?

EM: Yeah, when that commercial came out every single golfer wanted to practice bouncing the ball on the club.

MS: What's the best move you can do?

EM: I'm not really into the tricks with the golf club, but I can do the Camilo Villegas: toss my iron onto the ground and it'll hop right back and I'll catch it.

MS: Who's the best freestyler on the team?

EM: I'd have to say John Murphy.

MS: Do you ever talk trash to the guy you're playing with?

EM: Not really. Sometimes there are guys that do things that are talking trash. They'll psych themselves up. Kind of talk to themselves or yell to themselves, you know what I mean?

MS: When you walked into the interview-I don't mean to hate on your style-but Cal sweatshirt, Cal backpack and Cal sweatpants. You're one of those athletes, aren't you?

EM: I'll wear sweatpants with a different sweater.

MS: Different sweater, you mean like a crew sweater instead of a hooded sweatshirt?

EM: No, like a normal fleece that doesn't say anything on it.

MS: Oh wow, that's very shocking.

MS: You told me you have workouts in the morning. What does a workout for golfers consist of?

EM: We do 40 minutes of cardio. Stairmaster, the treadmill. We did sprints one time and it killed us.

MS: After that did the coach say, 'Sorry, I won't do this again to you guys?'

EM: Yeah, we didn't do that afterwards. We were all sore for a week.
