There is something different about the Cal men's golf team. Their putter is still meant for the greens, their swings still produce dollar-size divots and their hats still remain emblazoned with the word "Cal."

What's different is that their confidence is restored.

That confidence comes two weeks after the Bears won their first event of the 2009 campaign, blistering through the field at the Spartan Classic.

Cal heads to the Great Lakes region this weekend as Northwestern hosts the Windon Memorial Classic at Skokie Country Club on Sunday and Monday.

Fifty-four holes of bent fairways, undulating, slippery greens and intense mental and physical strain await them as they head to Glencoe, Ill. The Bears will approach the challenging 7,081-yard Skokie golf course with a 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.

Five top-25 programs highlight the 15-team field, consisting of coast-to-coast talent that potentially could make this tournament a battle to the final putt.

Juniors Eric Mina and Stephen Hale tee it up first and second this weekend for the Bears. Last time on the links, Mina won the individual title at the Spartan Classic and Hale set a new Cal record for lowest score with a Tiger-esque round of 9-under par, 63.

They are followed by two freshmen: Michael Weaver, after 10 days of sick leave, and Curtis Loop.

Evan Derian completes the five-man squad for the Bears, making his first appearance since 2008 after suffering a severe back injury.

Derian was previously a 2008 Pac-10 honorable mention and is expected to be one of the leaders of the team.
