It's been a long time coming just to get to this tournament.

Before the No. 24 Cal men's golf team tees off at the Spartan Golf Classic tomorrow, it had to endure eight rounds of intrasquad competition to determine the six members of the 2009-2010 team.

At the end of what coach Steve Desimone called "the longest tryout in program history," the five starting spots were awarded to freshmen Curtis Loop and Brandon Hagy and juniors Eric Mina, Stephen Hale and Chad Vivolo.

It's an inexperienced lineup. Loop and Hagy will be playing in their first collegiate tournament this weekend, and Vivolo's best finish with the Bears was 47th place at the Collegiate Conference Challenge earlier in the month. Only Mina and Hale have played more than three career rounds for the Bears.

Cal has the added challenge of playing on foreign ground. The Spartan Classic marks the Bears' first trip to an event hosted by Michigan State and their first time playing at The Kingsley Club, a par-71, 6,723-yard course.

Cal is up against 14 other teams, including two squads fielded by the Spartans. Among the familiar foes on the green are San Francisco, UC Davis and Santa Clara.

The Bears tee off Saturday at 9 a.m., and will play two rounds on that day. They finish up at 9:30 a.m., on Sunday.
