The opening of a Tully's Coffee kiosk in the lobby of the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Union building has been delayed several weeks from an originally projected date.

Although officials had hoped to open the kiosk by the start of the fall semester, the shop is now expected to begin operating on Sept. 8, according to Karl Caraveo, CEO of JH Distribution, a branch of the contractor that would operate the kiosk.

"Nothing ever seems to go as smoothly as you'd like it to," he said. "It always takes twice as long and costs twice as much."

Caraveo said the delay stemmed primarily from an inaccurate design of the kiosk that had to be redone.

"Everybody has approved it, everyone has signed off, and now the darned thing doesn't fit," he said.

The ASUC Store Operations Board unanimously approved Tully's lease in March and construction of the kiosk began in mid-August.

Although the kiosk is expected to open to the public on Sept. 8, Caraveo said the grand opening will not likely be held until late September.

"At (the grand opening) we'll have the bells and the whistles and the balloons," he said.
