A fraternity member fell from the Sigma Chi house early yesterday morning.

The incident occurred at about 2 a.m. on the 2300 block of College Avenue, according to Berkeley police Officer Andrew Frankel.

Police believe the man, whose name has not been released, fell from a third-story window. He was taken to Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland.

The man sustained serious injuries but is in stable condition, said Sigma Chi chapter president Mike Harris.

Harris said he did not know how the incident happened and declined to give information about the injured fraternity member prior to speaking to his family.

Frankel said police believe "alcohol was probably a factor."

A similar accident occurred on April 16 when a man fell from the third-story window of a fraternity house on Piedmont Avenue. Police declined to say at the time if alcohol was involved.

Sarah Rodriguez'G, project coordinator for Students for a Safer Southside, said fraternities need to take measures to prevent these types of accidents.

"I think in fraternities, it's easier to get away with drinking ... just the culture of drinking is more common among Greek students," she said. "They should have a much more extensive and strict policy when it comes to alcohol."

According to Rodriguez'G, the campus needs to change the attitudes of students toward drinking.

"Our culture is kinda breeding this overconsumption, so that needs to be changed," Rodriguez'G said.
