The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a man from the water near the Berkeley Marina Wednesday night.

At about 6:55 p.m., the Coast Guard received a call from the man's wife, who was still aboard the boat, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Dorian Jackson.

The Coast Guard launched a 25-foot small boat into the marina to rescue the man, who had fallen off his 41-foot sailing vessel two miles west of the marina, Jackson said.

At about 7:15 p.m., Coast Guard officers pulled the man out of the water and took him ashore, where he was promptly taken into the care of the Berkeley Fire Department's Emergency Medical Services Division.

According to Charity Hoffman, public affairs officer for the Coast Guard, the man was conscious when he was taken aboard the rescue boat, but had a mild case of hypothermia.

"Usually people who get mild hypothermia are fine after a while," Hoffman said. "It's usually not a big deal."

Hoffman was unable to release information about the man's current health.

Jackson said similar situations occur two to three times a week in the Bay Area, but not as frequently in the Berkeley Marina.

"We pull one of them out of (the marina) about once a month," he said.

The marina is covered by the San Francisco sector of the Coast Guard, which is responsible for the region of California stretching from the Oregon state border to the area slightly south of the city of Monterey.

Hoffman said that wearing a life jacket at all times is the best way to ensure safety while out on the water.

"In boat emergencies, things happen so fast that people don't get to grab their life jackets," Hoffman said. "In this case, he was lucky because someone was on board who called for him."
