The family of Oscar Grant III filed a $50 million lawsuit against BART and several of its officers yesterday for Grant's fatal shooting at the Fruitvale BART station New Year's Day.

Along with BART, BART Police Chief Gary Gee and officers Johannes Mehserle, Tony Pirone and Marysol Domenici have been named as defendants in the wrongful death and civil rights lawsuit.

Mehserle, Pirone and Domenici were all at the scene at the time of the shooting.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are Grant's mother, Wanda Johnson, and his girlfriend, Sophina Mesa, who is the mother and guardian of the couple's daughter.

According to Bay City News, the attorney of Grant's family, John Burris, previously filed a $25 million claim against BART. But Burris said he doubled the lawsuit amount because investigations led him to believe that Grant "suffered more than I thought before."

Mehserle has been charged with murder and is scheduled to return to court on March 23 for a preliminary hearing.
