A 5-year-old boy was killed at about 1:45 p.m. today when a truck struck him as he was crossing the intersection of Derby and Warring streets.

The truck was heading southbound on Warring Street and making an eastbound turn on Derby Street when it hit the child in the middle of the intersection, said Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss.

A Berkeley resident in the neighborhood was giving the boy CPR when police arrived. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The boy was on his way to an after school program when he was hit, Kusmiss said.

The body was still on the scene under a blue and white tent as of 4:15 p.m.

Berkeley police are currently on location investigating the accident.
