Sept. 9: After a protest that became the longest urban tree-sit in history, the four final tree-sitters left the grove near Memorial Stadium, drawing national media attention.

Sept. 19: UC Berkeley publicly launched the Campaign for Berkeley, a $3 billion fundraising campaign to help the campus stay competitive with its private peer institutions.

Sept. 30: Two UC Berkeley students and former Cal football players allegedly broke into a suite in Clark Kerr Campus. The incident was spurred by racial remarks made at a party.

Nov. 4: Hundreds of UC Berkeley students cheered in the streets after Sen. Barack Obama was elected to be the first black President of the United States.

Nov. 13: UC Berkeley researchers published the first-ever photograph of what is believed to be a planet orbiting a star in a solar system other than our own.

Nov. 13: A fight broke out in Eshleman Hall over a pro-Israeli concert below, leading to the arrests of two UC Berkeley students and one alumnus.

Nov. 17: Pete Newell, the architect behind the Cal men's basketball program's only NCAA championship in 1959, died at the age of 93.

Nov. 19: The UC Board of Regents sent a statement to the California legislature saying it will cut enrollment if state funding to the university remains inadequate.

Nov. 24: President-elect Barack Obama nominates Christina Romer, a UC Berkeley economics professor, to be the chair of his Council of Economic Advisers.

Dec. 3: A petition to remove ASUC Senator John Moghtader gained the 1,000 signatures required for a recall election in the spring.
