Tristan Anderson, a former tree-sitter, was acquitted Tuesday of violating a stay-away order.

The order was imposed the night of June 19 after Anderson, 27, descended from the tree at the oak grove that he had manned for three days. He was arrested the following day when he was spotted on campus across Piedmont Avenue from the grove.

"The university tried to get me in trouble for no reason and a jury of my peers found that I wasn't guilty," Anderson said on Wednesday.

Though he has been exonerated of criminal charges, he still has to perform 50 hours of community service.

The university filed a civil suit seeking compensation for legal fees incurred from the nearly two-year-long tree-sit. Anderson and others involved in the protest settled the suit out of court.

"I think the university wanted to say that they were right," Anderson said. "It was a fine deal. (Doing community service is) something that we like to do anyway."

After Anderson completes his 50 hours of volunteer work at the Alameda County Food Bank, it will mark the end of another portion of the saga surrounding the oak grove protest.
