A man who reportedly threw eggs at vehicles in the Berkeley Marina early Sunday allegedly shot a motorist following a verbal confrontation.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., a male motorist, a resident of Oakland, was leaving the marina when his car was hit by eggs.

When the motorist stopped his car and verbally confronted the person reportedly throwing the eggs, the suspect allegedly pulled a gun from his waistband and fired several shots as the motorist fled, said Berkeley police Sgt. Dan Montgomery.

The victim was hit by one of the shots but did not receive any life-threatening injuries. Montgomery speculated that the victim has already been released from the hospital.

After being shot, the victim drove away in his vehicle, which was also hit by multiple gunshots, to the intersection of Shattuck Avenue and Allston Way before flagging down a police officer for help, Montgomery said.

The shooting occurred on Seawall Drive, south of University Avenue, where police found seven bullet casings at the scene.

Police describe the suspected shooter as a teenage male between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 10 inches tall. It is unknown why he was throwing eggs at the time.

Police are investigating the crime but have not yet made any arrests. The time of the crime as well as the fact that the victim did not immediately seek police assistance has limited the number of witnesses, Montgomery said.

The marina does not plan to modify any of its security measures in response to the shooting because it appears to be an isolated incident, said city waterfront manager John Mann.

"Obviously if there were other incidents we would have to reassess them," he said.

Police ask that anyone with information call the Bay Area Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or the department's non-emergency number, 510-981-5900.
