While California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and legislators remained in talks over the budget stalemate, the UC Board of Regents could not give final approval of the 2008-09 university budget during their meeting in Irvine today.

The regents were scheduled to finalize the university's budget earlier this morning but were unable to do so as the state budget is still not in place.

Instead, UC Vice President for Budget Parick Lenz presented the budget situation to the regents, outlining the potential effects of the stalemate on university finances.

Addressing the possibility that the impasse could be prolonged further, Lenz said that the university may need to take action if a budget is not passed by the next regents' meeting in November.

"If it is prolonged then we will have to come back in November with options for what the university will have to do if no state budget is in place," Lenz said.
