Facing Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's threatened veto of the California budget, UC officials said the university will continue operating without a finalized state budget for now.

The UC Board of Regents are scheduled to approve the university's 2008-09 budget at tomorrow's meeting. However, if the state budget is not approved by tomorrow, the regents cannot finalize the university's budget.

To account for the lack of state money, the university will borrow money from different sources of funding within the UC system, according to UC spokesperson Brad Hayward.

State funds account for roughly one-fifth of the university's overall budget, he said.

"The university can for the immediate period still get by without a budget," Hayward said. "Though the longer (the impasse) goes on, the more problems there will be."

As of today, the lack of funds have not caused the University of California any significant interruptions to its services or programs, officials said.

If the state budget is not approved by tomorrow, the regents will likely reconvene for an emergency session to finalize the 2008-09 UC budget when the California budget is eventually passed and signed, Hayward said.
