A West Berkeley house fire in the 1900 block of McGee Avenue caused approximately $300,000 property damage Thursday afternoon.

The blaze partially burned two houses and a nearby vehicle. The only injury was to a male resident who cut his arm while attempting to enter one of the burning houses to warn the inhabitants, said Berkeley police Lt. D. E. Delaney.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, which was reported to the Berkeley Fire Department around 12:20 p.m., said Deputy Fire Chief Gil Dong.

Fire fighters had the blaze under control by 1:15 p.m., Dong said.

At least ten firefighters were at the scene, including three who were on the roof with chain saws creating holes so that the hot air and smoke could escape.

"Essentially, we created a chimney," Dong said.

Smoke from the fire could be seen from the UC Berkeley campus, approximately one mile away.
