After one day of competition at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., the Cal men's tennis team had mixed results. Eight went 6-6 in singles play, and only two are still alive in the tournament.

In the singles main draw, freshman Pedro Zerbini won his first two matches to advance to the round of eight. Zerbini beat Arizona State's Andres Arango 6-2, 1-0 Ret (inj.) and then Stanford's Blake Muller 6-2, 7-6(8).

"I think I played a good match. The second match was tough, but I pulled through," Zerbini said. "I think I am ready for tomorrow."

No. 7-seeded sophomore Kallim Stewart also won his first-round match before falling 7-6, 6-3 to UCLA's Jeremy Drean.

Pierre Mouillon was unable to keep pace with his teammates, losing 6-3, 6-1 in the first round to USC's Jaak Poldma.

In the Invitational singles draw, second-seeded Bozhidar Katsarov has gone 2-0 so far, beating Stanford's Paul Morrissey 6-3, 7-5 in the second round.

Doubles play starts today with the fourth-seeded tandem of junior Geoff Chizever and Zerbini squaring off against Oregon's Geoff Embry and Romeo Mortera at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m., Mouillon and Stewart will take on second-seeded T.J. Bellama and Matt Brooklyn of Arizona State.

All matches are being played at Ojai Valley Athletic Club and will continue through Sunday.
