UC Berkeley chancellor from 1990-97 and one of the most well-loved figures in recent university history, Chang-Lin Tien died yesterday from complications stemming from a brain tumor.

Chang-Lin Tien

He was 67.

Tien, the first Asian American to head a major research university in the United States, was one of the foremost opponents of the UC Board of Regents 1995 decision to eliminate affirmative action.

In an interview with The Daily Californian, Tien said he considered resigning because of the decision.

When he announced his resignation in 1996, Tien said in part that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Tien was a professor and internationally renown scholar of engineering at UC Berkeley for most of his career before becoming head of the university.

During his time as chancellor, he helped create an East Asian center on campus.

Tien was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2000 and suffered a major stroke in the same year.
