The men and women of the Cal cross country team finished 18th and 13th, respectively, at Saturday morning's Pre-NCAA Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.

Sophomore Deborah Maier had the Bears' highest overall finish for the second consecutive meet, as she placed 13th out of a 247-woman white division by covering the 6,000-meter course in 21:00.3. Freshman Ellie Keene (54th) and sophomore Keena Kohl (92nd) rounded out the finishers inside the top 100.

In a meet that featured 11 top-30 squads, the Cal women beat out No. 12 Baylor and No. 20 Northern Arizona.

The men were paced by junior Kari Karlsson, who covered the 8,000-meter distance in 24:42.2 to finish 51st in the 238-man blue division. Karlsson was making his season debut after missing the Stanford Invitational.

He was accompanied in the top-100 by freshman Collin Jarvis (84th) and sophomore Maxime Chevee (100th), as the Bears took 18th place out of 34 squads on Saturday.

Cal competes next at the Pac-10 championships on riday, Oct. 30. The meet, which will feature a 10,000-meter for the men, will be held at the Sky Links Golf Course in Long Beach, Calif.
