A man was found dead inside his Berkeley Hills home early this morning from a self-inflicted gunshot following a standoff with Berkeley police that lasted several hours.

Following a single "loud report" to the Berkeley Police Department at about 7:36 p.m. Monday night, an officer arriving on the scene heard two gunshots near the 1800 block of Marin Avenue. A resident called the department soon after to report that a shot had struck his home on that block, according to a statement released this afternoon by Berkeley police Lt. Andrew Greenwood.

Police determined that the shots had been fired by a person inside a residence and evacuated other residents in the area. The Berkeley police Barricaded Subject/Hostage Negotiation Team was also activated, according to Greenwood.

Over the next several hours, members of the team attempted to negotiate with the man inside the residence. Police entered the home after they heard a single gunshot and found the man inside dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police have not yet released the man's name, and an investigation is ongoing. No other community members were injured in the incident.
