UC Berkeley student Masaki Kakizawa was arrested Monday afternoon after he allegedly took pictures of a female student in a bathroom stall on the third floor of the Valley Life Sciences Building.

At around 4:31 p.m., a female UC Berkeley student noticed a hand with a camera phone reaching over the top of her bathroom stall to take pictures, according to UCPD Capt. Margo Bennett. The victim proceeded to yell at the suspect and chased him out of the bathroom toward the Marian Koshland Bioscience and Natural Resources Library on the same floor. When she caught up to the suspect in the library, she allegedly took his phone and erased four pictures he had taken of her in the stall. She then returned his phone.

The suspect was still in the VLSB library when the victim contacted UCPD from the library's front desk. The victim worked with police to identify Kakizawa, 22, who was then taken to the Berkeley City Jail and was booked on a charge of peeping with a camera, according to Bennett.

The charge was dropped in court on Tuesday at the request of the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, though the investigation is ongoing, according to Bennett. The department is still in possession of Kakizawa's laptop and phone.

Bennett said UCPD does not yet have information regarding whether there are more pictures or evidence on the laptop or phone.

In a similar incident in October, a man disguised as a woman allegedly took pictures of several women in the RSF locker room on two occasions. UCPD arrested the suspect about two weeks later.
