The Cal volleyball team has advanced to the NCAA championship match for the first time in school history.

The Bears defeated USC in straight sets (25-14, 25-17, 25-20) in Thursday night's national semifinal match at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Cal's defense set the tone early, holding the Trojans to a -.027 hitting percentage in the first set.

Junior outside hitter Tarah Murrey posted a double-double with 23 kills (.413 hitting percentage) and 14 digs.

The Bears will face three-time defending national champion Penn State in the title match on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The Nittany Lions knocked the Bears out of the tournament the last three years.
