Sophomore Joanne Lee shot the lowest score on the first day of the Pac-10 Championship to help the Cal women's golf team to a third place standing. Lee is five strokes under par with a 67.

She started with four birdies in the first five holes, flying on her way to land the number one individual rank.

Freshman Jacqueline Williams was another of Cal's keys to its day one success. Filling in for the injured Daniela Holmqvist, Williams stepped up big with a par score of 72, tying for ninth place individually.

Senior Roseanne Niven and junior Pia Halbig are not far behind with identical scores of two-over par. They are in a tie for 25th place. Sophomore Emily Childs had an unimpressive first round, shooting a 14-over, the second-worst of all golfers.

Cal's collective score of 287 puts it in good company, three strokes behind USC and two ahead of UCLA. Arizona State sits in first with a one stroke lead on USC.

The Bears tee off today at 8:30 a.m.
