After the first of three rounds, the Cal women's golf team sits in 11th place of the 17 teams at the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.

Sophomore Joanne Lee leads the Cal squad once again with a two under par (+70), tying for the sixth individual spot.

Senior Roseanne Niven and junior Pia Halbig both shot 74s to share the tie at the 38th individual spot.

Sophomore Emily Childs and freshman Jacqueline Williams both finished with a score of 78 (six-over) and lay claim to the 70th individual spot together.

The Bears are only one stroke behind 10th place Pepperdine and one stroke ahead of the Cardinal.

There is a four-way tie for fourth place between Alabama, UCLA, New Mexico, and Denver, all of which have a collective score of 291.

Cal's total score of 296 places it in striking range of a top five finish in the case of solid second and third rounds despite its current standing at 11th.

Tournament host Arizona State handily leads the pack with a score of 279. Caroline Ciganda's individual first place score of 68 (four under par) is at the head of Arizona State's charge.

The second round begins at 8 a.m., on Saturday.
