Heading into the Big Row against Stanford, the varsity boat of the Cal women's crew team boasted six straight head-to-head victories against its conference rival.
But on Saturday morning, the Bears' streak was halted in overwhelming fashion at Redwood Shores Lagoon.
Cal dropped four of five races against the Cardinal, including a 6:25.6-6.29.5 loss in a race between the teams' varsity boats in Redwood City, Calif.
The outcome seemed somewhat unexpected, especially because the Bears' top-ranked varsity eight crew defeated Stanford by almost nine seconds at the Lake Natoma Invitational two weekends ago.
In last year's Big Row, Cal swept its cross-bay counterpart, highlighted by a come-from-behind win in the varsity eight event.
A year later, the results were almost reversed, as the Cardinal clocked faster times than the Bears in the first four events of the annual regatta.
Cal avoided the sweep with a 15-second victory from its novice eight crew in the last race of the day.
For both teams, the Big Row marked the last official race before the Pac-10 championships, which begin May 17 in Gold River, Calif.
