The varsity eight of the Cal men's crew entered its dual regatta against Washington with the highest ranking in the nation, while the host Huskies came into Montlake Cut in Seattle with two straight victories in the Schoch Cup.
The latter prevailed.
Washington's fourth-ranked varsity eight finished in a time of 5:48.56, clipping the Bears by 2.30 seconds on Saturday.
It was one of four wins on the day for the Huskies, which swept Cal one week ahead of the team's matchup against Stanford for the Big Row in Redwood Shores, Calif.
In the teams' meeting last year, the Bears' varsity eight lost to then-No. 1 Washington by 6.60 seconds. Cal's losing time of 5:48.71 in that race was just 0.15 seconds slower than the Huskies' winning time in this year's duel.
The Schoch Cup is given to the winner of the annual race between the varsity boats of the Bears and Washington.
