In what police are calling Berkeley's second homicide of the year, a Berkeley man died after being shot in South Berkeley shortly before midnight last night, police said.

Police found Brandon Terrell Jones, 29, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds near the intersection of Harmon and California Streets late Sunday night, said Berkeley police Lt. Andrew Greenwood.

Residents on the 1500 block of Harmon Street called police to report hearing multiple gunshots in the area at 11:50 Sunday night, Greenwood said.

Officers arrived on scene within three minutes and found Jones on the sidewalk, Greenwood said.

Jones was treated by Berkeley Fire Department paramedics and taken to Highland General Hospital in Oakland, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives worked throughout the night and into this morning investigating the homicide, police said.

An autopsy will be performed today, said an official with the Alameda County coroner's Office.

There were five homicides in Berkeley in 2007. Two of the five cases have not been solved.
